Galaxy #27 - Fatebringer

Postby Tapsa on January 20th, 2009, 3:51 pm

I'm starting to get tired of losing this level... I've been trying to beat this level for probably 5 hours (on three different sessions), and I'm fresh out of ideas on how to improve my strategy. So any ideas on how to beat this galaxy would be appreciated.

A brief recap of what I've tried. I've concluded that the key here is to get rid of the Oracle base asap. Since they keep sending cruisers at me if I don't destroy them immediately, and the destroyers the Keeper sends to their base pass through my base and wreak havoc while cruising through. So at the start, I send the two bombers on the west edge of the map to the Oracle base, and build two more and send them there as well. The other two bombers I send to take the planets closest to them. The freighter I send for a metal=>oil trade run starting from the asteroid at the top of the map. My bombers usually manage to destroy the Oracle base (Usually = If Oracle doesn't build assassins for base defense. Sometimes he builds just assasins, sometimes just interceptors, and sometimes both). If I win, i might have 2-4 bombers alive, and I send them to take the blue planet. After that it's just a race to build assasins to deal with the ships headed for my base. I lose the planets quickly to enemy forces, and I move the bombers to safety. My freighter keeps getting shot at, so I have to fix it after each run, and after the first run I just go for a metal run, since there is a Keeper assassin at the red planet.

At some point when I have enough assassins, I send most of them and all available bombers to the Redog base (I keep the one that started from the NE corner near the Keeper base, as it wouldn't stand a chance getting anywhere else). I have to keep some base defense, and my only income at this point is scavenging ships flying to or by my base, since I don't have enough ships to take and hold any asteroids or planets. The Redog base falls, and I send my remaining ships to take the planet nearby, and repair for the next assault. If I have bombers left, they'll go sit in a safe spot near the keeper base. I'll reinforce my fleet, and take the keeper base. At this point, my base is down to about 20 armor. The Swarm starts swarming me with scavengers, and I try get any available ships to their base. And I never get there with a fleet that has any chance of destroying them... My results so far: 4 times I've run out of time getting to the swarm base, and 2 times I have tried to attack, but my forces have been to weak. And there hasn't been much time to reinforce or repair as my base is normally down to about 1-3 armor by the time my fleet get's there.

Now this is my most succesful strategy. I've tried others too, but nothing worked as well as this. I'm off to bed now, but hopefully someone could shove me in the right direction so I could finally beat this level tomorrow... Is there a solution that doesn't rely on shear luck? I'm strating to think that these last few levels need more luck than tactics :? And I seem to be fresh out of luck

Let me play it again as I can't remember how I beat this one. I do recall it was one of top 5 toughest. Keep in mind though, that I do not use trading.
I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are. Milton Berle

There are two different approaches to this galaxy.

1. One idea is to eliminate the Keepers with your Bombers right away. Use 2 Bombers that are nearby, do some hit and run until they're dead. Careful to keep those bombers from dying.

A big priority on this map is to kill the enemy traders. Going after the Oracle base is hard. Going after the Oracle traders is easier. Kill the Freighters and you will not see many Cruisers coming at you.

I use the other 2 bombers to defend my base. (have them take the heat) I buy some As and maybe a D. Lots of interceptors. You want to keep your base in one piece while you kill the enemy traders. Go after Redog traders next. Leave the Swarm alone. Their constant attacks will let you earn a lot of cash by Scavenger.

Once the enemy traders are gone, get some trade of your own going using the resources near the Swarm. Also, you will have some opportunities to take over resources (though, you probably not hold them for too long).

2. Strategy #2 involves taking out the Redogs right away instead of the Keepers. This is harder to do, since their defenders are better. You might have to devote some of your initial $ to help those 2 bombers near the redogs. Your next priority is to kill the Oracle and Keeper traders (in that order). If you stop their cash flow, you will win. This strategy is worse than the first one. Why? You will still be in the cross-section between Keepers and Oracle.

In any case, your main source of income on this map will be Scavenging. Don't worry too much about trade or planets for the first half of the game. Just make sure you've got a Scav!

Thanks Fatebringer. I'll have to try that tonight when I get home from work. I don't think I ever tried to take the keepers first, as I found their destroyers were doing a nice job in harassing the others. Hit and run you say? Hmm.. That just might work as they don't build a lot of defending ships, and those Scavengers are mostly harmless. And those bombers might be just what is needed to keep my base from being shot down so fast. Sounds like a plan. Now I just have to force myself to keep away from the game untill I get home ;)

YEEES!

I finally did it. It must a have taken a 1000 tries and 5-6 hours of real time, but I finally conquered Fatebringer. And with 6 armor to spare :D

I did pretty much as Program Fatebringer instructed above. Destroyed the Keepers with two bomber doing hit and run attacks, went after the traders early, and tried to have a few separate fleets roaming around my base taking care of anyone who tried to fly by. First the Keepers fell, then the Redogs, then Oracle, and finally the Swarm. And my freighter did almost constant trade runs only stopping for repairs. First metal=>oil=>Starport, and once the redogs' destroyer appeared there I switched to just running metal for a while, until I dealt with their base.

On to the next one 8-)

One thing I learned from this level: I never used interceptors for base defense before. I only used them to take and hold planets and asteroids. In this level, there are so many enemies coming at my base, that some would always get through. A large fleet protecting the base proved to be very effective in drawing fire away from the starbase itself. And I never thought about doing hit and run attacks with bombers before

Very, very nice, think about some of those skills you learned and use them on 29, although a bit different with different ships somewhat the same philosophy though. Had to play it until you won it eh? Fantastic!
